sweetgreen practices

  • Packaging: All of our packaging is compostable bio-degradable made from Corn. That includes salad bowl, forks, spoons, dressing cups and lids and yogurt cups
  • Our napkins and sweetgreen takeout bags are made from recycled paper from 100% post consumer content
  • And of course there's our take out menus, which are printed on recycled paper with Wildflower seeds embedded into the paper, so customers can actually plant the menu and see wildflower sprout.
  • We have reusable salad bowls that we call a "salad blaster" and reusable canvas sweetgreen bags sold to customers to reduce waste.
  • Design: Additionally, the centerpiece of the store's design is the environmentally- friendly, reclaimed hickory wood from a barn in Virginia used to cover the floor, walls, and ceiling. The design has developed a fresh and hip environment that mirrors the restaurant's approach to its food. Sweetgreen also implemented energy efficient lighting and printed their wall graphic on recycled paper printed with soy based inks.
  • Food: Customers can even taste Sweetgreen's commitment to sustainable living through our all-natural and locally grown ingredients. Sweetgreen uses local and organic produce when in season or available.

story

the sweetgreen story

sweetgreen is the answer to the new era of fast-casual dining. We offer customers delicious, all-natural, salads and refreshing frozen yogurts. With award winning décor and operational simplicity, sweetgreen creates a chic atmosphere and a unique dining experience. Epicureans finally have the opportunity to eat a quick and convenient gourmet meal.

Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman and Nathaniel Ru, Georgetown students and food lovers, spent three years living in a neighborhood with limited food options. The question of "where should we go eat?" was very hard to answer. They thought, "why not create a place that we would want to eat on a daily basis?" Their idea was simple, a healthy, fast-casual place with a focus on high quality ingredients. Hailing from New York City and Los Angeles, they had seen similar concepts to sweetgreen, but had a vision of their own: create a place that fuses a healthy meal with a healthy desert.

The three students spent their senior year refining the concept, putting together the plans and developing the menu. They spent many months testing menu items and continue to look for ways to make sweetgreen even better!
