things we dig: applegate farms

Applegate Farms brings wholesome natural and organic meats and cheeses back to the table.  They are committed to farming with integrity, treating animals with respect, and maintaining a transparent company.  Combined, this results in tasty and sustainable products.

Thanks to Applegate Farms, our marquee sponsor for the Sweetlife Festival.  Stop by the Applegate Activation Zone where food, art and play combine in an experience designed to make people smile. You will sample Applegate’s Great Organic Grass-Fed Beef Hot Dogs, families will let kids participate in an Imagination Playground that encourages movement and free play and local artists will be on hand to help tour visitors express themselves on what “real” food means to them. You’ll also be able to taste all the delicious (and healthy) grub provided by Applegate in concessions.

things we dig: opower

Thanks to Sweetlife Festival sponsor, OPOWER,  this year’s festival is greener than ever.  Here is a special note from the company that helps people make smart decisions about energy consumption:

Once upon a time (circa 2007), one modern man and a lifelong friend had a vision of creating a sustainable future by empowering people to make smarter decisions about their energy use. They wanted to turn on the lights, so to speak, for the 300 million Americans who were in the dark about their energy use.

Our premise is simple: by simply giving utility customers better information about their personal energy usage, we’re helping avoid a national energy [lupe] fiasco. By helping people save money and save energy, we’re also helping reduce carbon emissions, and the result is what some might call crystal castles – software that is on track to save Americans $500 million over the next three years and abate more than 3.7 million tons of carbon emissions.  Oh, and enough energy to power 450,000 homes for a year—every year.  While our employees may never walk the moon, we’re working to sustain the earth, and we’re based right here in DC, just like a lot of US royalty types.

Looking back at the 20th century’s energy crises—with cold war kids running around starting [ra ra] riots—we’re excited to helping create a better energy future. Our founders and product developers hit upon quite a few strokes of genius in creating our customer engagement platform—which, if deployed throughout the US, would be equivalent to taking New York City (and two other cities of same size) off the grid. Entirely. Forever. That’s millions of homes powered by the friendliest energy source out there: you!

That’s surely something to get the girl talk going in high schools across the nation, or give Theophilus London new fodder for their next hit song. We at OPOWER couldn’t be more excited to be sponsoring the Sweetlife Festival this year—a day of awesome music centered around nurturing and promoting sustainable lifestyles is what we call a good time. We hope you enjoy it as well!

  • Recycled over 11,000 batteries, 10,000 pounds of plastic bags, 2,000 light bulbs, and 890 cell phones

  • Composted 100,000 pounds of what would have otherwise been waste material

things we dig: merriweather post pavilion

Sweetlife Festival has come a long way over the years.  We started out in a parking lot behind sweetgreen Dupont to now hosting in one of the most famous outdoor concert venues in the country.  Merriweather Post Pavilion is located in Columbia, Maryland and home to legendary music performances ranging from The Who and Led Zeppelin to Virgin Festival.  It’s got a great vibe; you’ll feel like you’re in the forrest because the outdoor amphitheater and lawn are surrounded by trees in the 40 acre Symphony Woods.  And they are green, too! The buildings are LEED certified, lights are solar powered, and they compost.  It is definitely a venue that completes the unforgettable festival experience.  Don’t miss Sweetlife Festival on May 1.

things we dig: plants that text and tweet

Like us, you probably always thought of texting and tweeting as human-only activities. Now we’re not the only one who can text and tweet- plants have a voice, too. Scientists have devised a soil-moisture sensor which allows plants to send either a text or a tweet to its owner. With a non-invasive probe which measures moisture levels in the soil, your fern can ask to be watered, thank you for watering, and even warn you if you have over-watered.  If you are handy with electronics, you can try and build this flora-frankenstein yourself.  We’re not sure what happens when you send a message to your plant…
