Last week, the sun shone brighter than it has in a long, long time. We decided to celebrate by giving out free salads to the people in Dupont Circle enjoying the beautiful afternoon. We gave people 15 minutes notice via Twitter and Facebook to meet us at the fountain in Dupont Circle. Nadal and I walked over from the store with 25 salads, jumped up on the fountain and announced “free Sweetgreen salads!” Everything was gone within a few minutes; the people were really happy to have a nice sweetgreen salad on a sunny day in the park.

At Garfield Elementary, we visited the same two fourth grade classes as last time for a new lesson, “Eat with the Seasons!” We gave each student a seasonal produce calendar to keep, and talked about what it means to eat locally and seasonally. We taught them about the benefits of eating like a locavore, and they enjoyed hearing that a small carbon footprint causes less pollution and that fresh produce just tastes better! They also learned about composting; the kids loved the idea that sweetgreen uses forks made of corn. To sum up the lesson, we made a salad as a class with ingredients from each season: spinach (winter), red bell peppers (summer), sweet potatoes (fall), apples (spring).
It was another successful adventure for sweetgreen in schools this week. On our next visit to Garfield Elementary, we will be accompanied by sweetflow mobile. The students, their teacher, and even the principal are very excited for this one!
“Overall it went extremely well and the kids were excited to have us back! The kids couldn’t have been sweeter…not to be corny, but they melted our hearts. One little girl made me a card that said, “Thank you Carly, you treat me as a friend” and she drew a flower on it –so cute of her to give that to me. It was nice going back for the second visit to see all the familiar faces and to know that the kids clearly felt more comfortable with us.”

The winner of Sweetflow Mobile’s 9:30 club ticket-giveaway recaps the Robert Randolph and the Family Band concert on Halloween weekend:
“The band came onto stage in Halloween costume and opened with an instrumental MJ’s Thriller. That was hilarious but strangely no one did the Thriller dance, to which I was disappointed in. What’s wrong with kids today that there’s no group Thriller? As the band played their music, more and more of the costumes came off the bands. I did not realize many of the band members are actual family members of Robert Randolph. That was really cool. At one point the song was dedicated to women and they invited all the girls to come and boogie on stage. It looked liked an Austin Powers dance montage.”

This past Thursday and Friday, Sweetflow Mobile was honored to serve over 8,000 people each day at the First Annual Curbside Cookoff - DC’s food truck vendor extravaganza! We featured our seasonal toppings: baked apples, baked pears, and s’mores — a fancy new sweetflow topping combo with chocolate chips, graham crackers and blow-torched mini marshmallows. We were so excited to be nominated for the festival and had a blast swirling sweetflow to the DC masses. We want to thank The Department of Consumer and Affairs (DCRA), the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Brightest Young Things, and the Downtown BID for making the Curbside Cookoff possible.
