For many local food enthusiasts, mid-March to April is the most frustrating time of year. The calendar says it’s spring, the warm weather and cherry blossoms seem to say it’s spring… and yet we still catch ourselves wondering, “Where is all the spring food?” The FRESHFARM Dupont Farmers Market was packed this past Sunday with people eating up the first signs and flavors of the change in season. Organic milk producer Clear Spring Creamery, whose grass-fed cows are given a much deserved holiday in the winter, was back in full force – and sold out of its chocolate milk by 10:30am! Sunnyside Farm had a limited supply of tiny orange and red grape tomatoes. And even though it couldn’t offer any springtime favorites, Three Springs Farm had heaps of tasty winter kale and brussels sprouts.
And now, for those of you who don’t think you can hang in there much longer, a reassuring message from the sweetgreen Sourceress:
“The sunshine has my creative juices flowing, and I’m coming up with new Seasonal Salads and Spring Market sides that highlight the very best of what’s in season in the Mid-Atlantic. Think salads with tender raw asparagus and tangy goat cheese, and juicy local strawberries flecked with mint and piled high on a swirl of Sweetflow…” -Erin, the Sourceress
