may salad

As a tribute to the return of arugula, May’s seasonal salad features the spicy green and mesclun with a local mix of crisp, raw asparagus from Godfrey Farms (MD), strawberries from Virginia and North Carolina, sunflower seeds, feta cheese from Mountain View Farms (VA), a sprinkle of fresh mint from Arc Greenhouse (NJ), and our homemade balsamic vinaigrette.  Now that it’s May, it finally feels and tastes like spring!

The May salad was debuted at Sweetlife Festival in our pop-up sweetgreen store.  The store was constructed in 2 days by Staach, the millworker and furniture provider for sweetgreen UPenn and Foggy Bottom (coming soon).  It was built with reclaimed silver pine on the posts with FSC radiata white pine.

sweetgreen in schools: cleveland elementary 2.0

This past Friday, sweetgreen in schools went back to visit the bright third graders at Cleveland Elementary. Some of the students told us about how they made salads at home since the last time we saw them. It was their turn to learn about what it means to eat locally and seasonally. We made a salad as a class with spinach, grapes, green apples, cucumbers, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and mozzarella cheese with a champaign vinaigrette. Although, they all gobbled up their salads, they missed the kale that we had for our previous visit – we discussed that we didn’t bring it because kale is no longer in season. Using a seasonality calendar, they worked on an activity handout where they drew produce that is in season and grown locally at nearby farms during their birthday months. At the time of their birthday they will now know what produce to look at for.

The third graders at Cleveland Elementary are looking forwarding to coming to the Sweetlife Festival in May. There they will have a picnic, go through various energy zones, and possibly even have a dance competition. We are really excited to have them come out to Merriweather Post Pavilion!

winter farmers markets

The weather is teasing us and luring us to our favorite spring pastime, farmers markets.  Contrary to popular belief, the farmers market is not just a seasonal phenomenon. If you are in search of winter’s seasonal bounty with the early arrivals of spring, blog Going Green DC scouted out local farmers markets in the DC metro area that are open now.  Use your local sweetgreen location as a checkpoint to find the nearest farmers market:

Dupont Circle: Dupont Circle FreshFarm Market on Sundays

Bethesda: Bethesda Central Farm Market on Sundays

Ballston: Clarendon’s Metro Farmers Market on Wednesdays

Capitol Hill: Eastern Market on Saturdays and Sundays

february salad

This month’s seasonal salad has a little kick to keep you going through the winter.  February debuts local spicy pickles from Kaplan and Zubrin in Camden, NJ which are mellowed out by local goat cheese.  We toss in another rookie to the line- roasted portobello mushrooms.  They’re hearty and add a smoky flavor which complete the salad with cherry tomatoes and fresh pesto vinaigrette and a squeeze of lemon.  Make this vegetarian salad vegan by substituting the goat cheese for roasted tofu.

introducing cranberry apple cider

Cranberries, cranberries everywhere, and all the more to drink.  OK, maybe that’s not exactly how it went in Rime of the Ancient Mariner, but we are going insane for cranberries and putting it in our new cranberry apple cider.  It pairs exceptionally well with the November salad tossed in our housemade cranberry vinaigrette.  Available now at all locations (except Georgetown – sorry guys).

november salad

For November we will feature lots of new ingredients and some old favorites.  Remember the spicy kale market side?  It’s back and you will find it in this month’s salad – but that’s not even the best part!  We start with a mesclun base, add crispy spicy kale, roasted butternut squash, raw cauliflower, sunflower seeds, and roasted turkey.  Then, it’s tossed up with our new seasonal cranberry vinaigrette.  Now you don’t have to wait until November 25th to enjoy the flavors of Thanksgiving!
