No release date has been set, but Fraiture hopes it’s soon. “If we could do it tomorrow, that’d be great. But yeah, as soon as possible I think”.

music friday: submarine soundtrack

Arctic Monkey’s front man Alex Turner recorded the soundtrack for the new indie comedy Submarine. Submarine is a quirky film following the story of a 15-year-old in the process of growing up. The soundtrack is self assured, soothing and heavy with influences from Turner’s side project The Last Shadow Puppets. The songs fill in and express the unspoken emotions of the film. Alex Turner’s calm and soothing vocals with a touch of wit perfectly portray resolute adolescent uncertainty and a figure it out as you go philosophy. Submarine is set to be released on June 3, 2011. Below is the film’s trailer and soundtrack. Make sure you look for the Arctic Monkey’s newest album Suck It and See, out June 7.

music friday: food and the philosophy of indie music

Music and food are more closely connected than you would expect. The modern foodie movement expresses many of the same values found in good music. The indie music scene finds ownership and means of production to be ethical issues, preferring small, independent, local operations to large corporations. Indie values include DIY aesthetics, simplicity, authenticity, purity, an antipathy to the synthetic and manufactured. These concerns are shared by hip food obsessives who want to know how food is made, where it comes from, how far it travels, and how much integrity it has. The more artisanal the food is, the better. If you are paying attention to food production and consumption isn’t that similar to paying attention to how your music is made, who owns it, and how it is delivered yo you? Foodies are concerned if food producers are exploited or if distribution produces a large carbon footprint. You can look at a label of any artisanal food and see indie values: locally sourced, independently owned, limited quantities, traditional methods, purity, simple ingredients, and most of all organic, uncontaminated by additives. Isn’t that what the sweetlife is all about?

music friday: the sounds of 2011

2011 is shaping up to be an unbelievable year for music. Here is some news were really excited to see play out in the next year:

Keep a look out for sweetlife sessions in 2011. These in store concerts are a great way to see some amazing artists in an intimate setting while enjoying some tasty sweetgreen salads and yogurt.

We’re really excited about Danger Mouse and Broken Bells producer Brian Burton’s newest project Rome. It’s a collaboration with composer Daniele Luppi and is inspired by 60s Italian film soundtracks. If that doesn’t sound amazing enough already the album will also feature Norah Jones and Jack White! The album is set to drop some time this year.

The Flaming Lips plan to take an innovative approach to releasing their new album in 2011. Instead of releasing all the tracks at the same time, the band plans on releasing one song per month. They view this as a less daunting and more exciting approach to releasing music and we certainly look forward to hearing The Flaming Lips’ creativity in 2011.

Best Coast and Wavves are scheduled to head out on a joint tour later this month. Masters in the Lo-fi scene, these bands are making a stop at the 9:30 club in DC on January 31.

March 2011 has been announced as the release date for the strokes’ long awaited new album. Five years since their most recent album “First Impression of Earth”, this new album is said to feature the band’s classic sound. A world tour is set to follow the release although no dates have been announced yet.

This playlist includes some of our predictions for this year’s most promising up and coming artists
