snowballs and sweetgreen beanies

With news of an impending snowstorm, we closed all of our restaurants early.   When we caught wind of an epic snowball fight in Dupont Circle, we decided at the last minute that sweetgreen Dupont Circle store would stay open just for the fight!  Great work Metromix DC and the new DC Snowball Fight Association for making Dupont’s 2011 Snowball Fight a success.  The brave warriors who ventured in for a steaming bowl of soup got free limited edition sweetgreen beanies to complement their snow gear.  Enjoy today’s snow everyone.

things we dig: tranquil space

Tranquil Space’s Arlington yoga studio is hosting sweetgreen’s FREE YOGA WEEKEND to promote the grand opening of sweetgreen Ballston later this month.  We are yoga fanatics and especially dig their studio and wonderful staff.  They were listed as one of the top 25 yoga studios in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine so they’re legit gurus in the yoga field.  Check out their space in the video below – namaste!

music friday

On Wednesday night Phoenix played in Madison Square Garden and fans were given an unexpectedly incredible encore.  Daft Punk appeared onstage as Phoenix was playing “If I Ever Feel Better” and suddenly the special guests changed pace with “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”  As if it couldn’t get any better, both bands joined in to play “Around the World.”  Lucky for us, a fan caught it on video.  Enjoy and have a fabulous fall weekend.

things we dig: green festival dc oct 23-24

green festival

If you’re looking for a green, eco-friendly filled weekend, look no further than the Green Festival that will be making a stop on October 23rd & 24th. A cross-country project organized by Green America & Global Exchange, a wealth of respected experts, exhibitionists and speakers (including Ralph Nader!) will all be under one roof in the Mt. Vernon Convention Center. The mission of this event is to educate the people about sustainability and create solutions through discourse.

Check them out! There are many ways to get tickets other than buying them with money. A couple options are as easy as donating to a partnered charity or donating an old cellphone to recycle. See what you can do here. You can also get “green bucks” and use them with the many vendors that will be at the festival!

perfect time for apple picking

Freshly picked apples from a local farm can taste like a different fruit.  They only get better when picked at the height of their season in October.  My friends and I made apple picking a full day event and finished it off with a refreshing sweetgreen salad.  The next day I took it upon myself to peel, core, and cut apples to make apple crisp.  Can’t top that kind of fall weekend! -Bona

If you’re looking to do some fall-picking activities, here are some links to farms in Virginia and Maryland.  Also check out: Chiles Peach Orchard in Crozet, VA (where you will also find sweetgreen peaches) and Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD (that’s where I went).

Awesome 10+ part band originally from LA. Led by Alex Ebert and named after a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe who was “sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” You’ve probably heard their hit single “Home” but check out this track, “40 Day Dream” live in LA and the rest of the amazing album “Up From Below”.

They’re playing a sold out show tonight at 9:30 Club and again tomorrow at Virgin FreeFest.
