photo of the day: the cool kids on the hill

These are our “Cap Hill Kids”, a pretty cool  group of kids that love sweetgreen Capitol Hill.  They make reservations every Friday to reserve a table for their group.

Gabi Lopez and friends stopped by sweetgreen Capitol Hill in between briefings for a sweetflow break.  The girls are from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and were accepted to a two-week winter session program in Washington that aims to show all the different ways women can engage in public service.  Thanks Gabi for snapping the awesome photos!

We love when we get pictures of people enjoying sweetgreen, so if you document a sweetgreen moment and would like to share with us, please send it to ideas@sweetgreen.com

ho ho ho-down: holiday party 2010

For those who were wondering why our stores closed early last Thursday, here’s why! We threw a much deserved holiday party for all of our associates at our Capitol Hill store. Everyone from all 8 locations (including our newest Ardmore store) came together and gathered around pizza and wings from We, The Pizza, drinks, and music. As an added gift, everyone got sweetgreen beanies and General Managers got sweetgreen Patagonia fleeces!

As evidenced below, some kids got a little more into the holiday dress-up spirit than others. Much love to all of our amazing associates who made this year wonderful! Let’s do it again in 2011!

If you’re lovin’ on our Capitol Hill space, it’s the perfect place to throw an event. Let us know if you’re interested at info@sweetgreen.com and let’s plan a party!

office to store recap: sweetgreen corporate takes over capitol hill

When I first learned that we would be spending our Saturday morning and afternoon at the Capitol Hill store, I was a little nervous. I was only familiar with the sweetflow station (as per my previous position as Miss Sweetflow Mobile) and was not up to par in my salad mixing skills like our associates. But very shortly I got into the groove and had a ton of fun on the salad line! It was a lot of work but our entire office pulled together as a team and we made through it!

Besides getting to know the Capitol Hill neighbors, I think the best part was seeing Nic, Nate, and Jon (the owners) showing off their mixing, wrapping, and register skills. It was nostalgic to see them as they were back when we started as a little green tavern in Georgetown – and they still totally rocked!

When I wasn’t shuffling through the mesclun, I stood outside and spread free sweetgreen cheer in form of reusable bags, salad blasters, and beanies. After this extraordinary experience, we decided to make this tradition and try to make our rounds at every store! I can’t wait to serve up our neighbors again very soon.

Happy Holidays everyone!

- Bona

office to store: sweetgreen corporate team at capitol hill

You know that show Undercover Boss? Well, rather than just have one executive member secretly join the battlefields of the storefront, the entire corporate team (including the 3 founders Nicolas, Jonathan, and Nathaniel) will be working at the store tomorrow at our Capitol Hill location! Not only will you be seeing us tossing salads, folding up wraps, and topping the sweetflow, but we’ll be giving out extra sweetgreen goodies for you to wear loud and proud. Yes, we know what you’re thinking: do you question the abilities of the “corporate” office? Stop by for lunch anytime between 11:00am til 4:00pm and see for yourself.

Watch out the video to see the reactions of our Capitol Hill associates when they were told they got Saturday off, complete with PTO!

delorean presented by sweetlife sessions

Yesterday the 4 totally cool and down to earth guys from Delorean came to sweetgreen Capitol Hill to sign CDs, eat some guacamole greens salads, and talk to us about life and music.  Delorean hand-picked a fresh playlist for the store, so we sat down and asked them to talk about each of their choices (and then snuck in a few more questions!)

1.        Phyllis Dillon- “Make me yours”

This is our favorite reggae track.  We really like the sound and the feeling.

2.       Sueño latino- “Sueño latino” (Derrick May Illusión first rmx)

This one is a new discovery.  It is based on a sample of German musician’s, Manuel Gottsching, 57 minute song called E2-E4.  Sueño latino turns the track into house.

3.       Zomby- “Digital fauna”

The unique sound of this pick makes it one of our favorites from the UK.  It’s melodic but you can also play it at the club.

4.       UGK- “Diamonds and wood”

We miss Pimp C a lot- he was Igor’s favorite rapper.  We’re into southern rap, and this song highlights the older stuff from the nineties and the Houston sound.

5.       The Streets- “Has it come to this?”

It is a UK funky track, an original from the first Street’s record.  We like to use similar sounds as key features, like the vocal sampling and the piano.

6.       Jam and Spoon- “Stella”

This one is an old grunge track from 1992, probably our favorite grunge track.  We love it.  We love the filtering and it’s super melodic; it’s almost dance-poppy.

7.       Womack and Womack- “Teardrops”

Our friend posted this on his blog and we didn’t pay much attention to it until about one month ago and now we can’t stop listening to it.  It’s a perfect sound- it’s very rounded with brilliant vocals.

8.       Cluster -”Sowiesoso”

We found this track from a compilation of Hans Joachim Roedelius.  It’s a great electronic song from the 1970s and it’s just beautiful.  The song has got good synthesizers.

9.       NGUZUNGUZU- “El bebe ambiente”

It’s made by a couple of producers from LA and the track is just great.  It’s inspired by the tribal sound from Mexico.

10.   Hype Williams- “Untitled 8″

The group is 2 people from London and we just recently discovered them.  It’s really dark and it’s a great discovery.  The videos they have on youtube are really creepy.

SG: We notice you have a very diverse and international picks.  What about the Spanish musicians?

We would make this list 10,000 songs if we could.  For Spanish artists, we like El Guincho and John Talbot.

SG: What inspires you?

Making a good record and making a good band.

SG: What would be your sweetlife?

Having no worries or stress.  We enjoy quiet time.

sweetgreen capitol hill grand opening recap

This past Thursday, we had a Capitol Hill Grand Opening party to celebrate our arrival in the new neighborhood. Mayor Fenty and his team stopped by to help us cut the ribbon, mixologist Gina Chersevani from PS 7 masterfully crafted refreshing cocktails with VEEV vodka, and Whoops! master baker/entrepreneur McKee Flyod created decadent whoopie pies for all. The new neighborhood feels like home already! Photos below courtesy of Vincent Gallegos.

the alchemy of great taste

Alchemy-of-Great-Taste

On Saturday, March 13, sweetgreen participated in The Alchemy of Great Taste. The event, which took place in Eastern Market’s North Hall, was a fundraiser for the Tyler Elementary school in our soon-to-be new neighborhood of Capitol Hill. All proceeds have been donated to the school to provide a “structured and safe learning environment” for students. We are grateful to have had this opportunity to give back to the community and to meet some awesome future neighbors!
